Korea is full of unmanned stores (unstaffed shops) these days. From cafes and stationery stores to ice cream shops and even clothing stores, you can find them everywhere. I think they are booming because the prices are generally lower, and people have become very used to contactless services.
After dropping my daughter off at school in the morning, I often stop by a nearby unmanned cafe. I think I go there about twice a week. The best part? An Iced Americano is only 1,900 won (about $1.40). Since there’s no staff, it feels very comfortable. I don’t have to worry about anyone watching me (no pressure!), and I can stay as long as I want. Plus, the coffee is super cheap, and the taste is actually not bad at all!
However, there is a dark side to this convenience. Recently, these unmanned stores have been facing serious issues. Since the main customers of unmanned ice cream shops or stationery stores are young children, shoplifting has become a frequent occurrence.
There was a truly heartbreaking incident in Korea recently. A child stole from an unmanned ice cream shop two or three times. The owner, frustrated by the theft, publicly posted a CCTV photo of the child’s face at the store entrance to shame them. Tragically, the child took their own life because of it.
It was such a devastating event. I felt so angry at the immature handling of the situation by the adult. I wish it had been resolved more wisely… I understand the owner must have been furious about the repeated theft, but they were dealing with a young child, and they were the adult.
As a mother, my heart aches just thinking about how scared that child must have been. I truly hope our society can become a place where mistakes are corrected with guidance, not with shame. I want my child to grow up in a warmer world than this.

한국에는 무인상점이 아주 많다. 무인 카페, 무인 문구점, 무인 아이스크림 가게, 무인 옷가게 등등. 대부분 이런 상점들은 가격이 저렴하고, 많은 사람들이 비대면 방식에 익숙해졌기 때문에 많이 생긴 것 같다.
나도 매일 아침 아이를 학교에 데려다주고 무인 카페에 들른다. 아메리카노가 1,900원(약 1.4달러)이라서 일주일에 두 번 정도는 가는 것 같다. 직원이 없기 때문에 편하고, 눈치 볼 필요 없이 오래 있어도 좋다는 장점이 있다. 게다가 커피가 아주 싸고, 맛도 나쁘지 않다!
하지만 최근에는 이런 무인상점들 때문에 문제도 많이 생기는 모양이다. 특히 무인 아이스크림 가게나 무인 문구점의 주 이용자가 아이들이다 보니 절도 사건이 종종 일어난다.
최근 한국에서 정말 마음 아픈 사건이 하나 있었다. 무인 아이스크림 가게에서 아이가 2~3차례 물건을 훔쳤는데, 가게 사장이 아이의 얼굴이 나온 CCTV 사진을 경고문과 함께 가게 앞에 붙여 공개 망신을 주었고, 그 아이가 결국 스스로 생을 마감한 사건이었다.
너무나도 안타깝고, 어른의 미성숙한 대처에 너무 화가 났다. 좀 더 지혜롭게 풀었으면 좋았을 텐데… 반복되는 절도에 사장님도 물론 화가 났겠지만, 상대는 아직 어린아이였고 본인은 어른이지 않은가?
엄마로서 그 아이가 얼마나 무서웠을지 생각하니 마음이 너무 아프다. 우리 사회가 아이들의 실수를 공개적인 망신보다는 따뜻한 가르침으로 바로잡아주는, 조금 더 너그러운 세상이 되었으면 좋겠다.
